Soldering & PCB Repair

PCB Repair Services

From damaged traces to burnt components, we specialise in bringing circuit boards back to life through careful diagnosis and precision soldering work.

While most repair services simply swap out entire circuit boards, Test Tag Repair goes deeper. Our specialty is physical repairs - fixing boards with obvious visible damage such as burnt components, corrosion, cracked solder joints, and damaged traces. Our trinocular microscope allows detailed inspection and precision soldering work that brings boards back to life.

Our Approach

Our focus is on repairs where the problem can be identified visually - burnt components, leaking capacitors, corrosion damage, and physical trauma. This approach means:

Lower repair costs than board replacement
Repairs possible when boards are obsolete
Restoration of vintage and legacy equipment
Honest assessment of what can be fixed

Restoration Project: Vintage Acorn 3010

A recent project involved restoring a vintage Acorn 3010 computer that had suffered extensive corrosion damage from a leaking onboard battery - a common problem in computers from this era. The repair required careful cleaning of corroded traces, rebuilding damaged PCB tracks, and replacing components that had been eaten away by the battery acid. This kind of restoration work is exactly what we specialise in - bringing damaged boards back from the dead through careful physical repair work.

Types of Damage We Repair

Corrosion & Battery Damage

Cleaning corroded boards and rebuilding damaged traces from leaking batteries

Burnt Components

Identifying and replacing visibly burnt or overheated components

Dry & Cracked Solder Joints

Reflowing and repairing joints that have failed from age or thermal stress

Physical Trauma

Repairing boards damaged from drops, impacts, or liquid ingress

Leaking Capacitors

Replacing electrolytic capacitors that have leaked or bulged

Damaged Traces

Rebuilding PCB tracks that have been burnt through or corroded away

Common Component Repairs

Console HDMI Socket Replacement

Replacement of damaged or worn HDMI ports on gaming consoles - a common repair for PlayStation and Xbox

USB Socket Replacement

Repair or replacement of broken, loose, or worn USB ports on consoles and other devices

Electrolytic Capacitors

Replacement of bulging, leaking, or dried-out capacitors - the most common failure in older electronics

Through-Hole Components

Replacement of resistors, diodes, transistors, and other discrete components with visible damage

Connectors & Headers

Repair or replacement of damaged connectors, broken pins, and worn sockets

Solder Joint Rework

Reflowing cold joints, repairing lifted pads, and fixing thermal stress cracks

Trace Repair & Jumper Wires

Rebuilding damaged PCB tracks using jumper wires and conductive repair techniques

Honest Assessment

Not every board can be saved, and we'll always give you an honest assessment. Our strength is in physical repairs where the damage can be seen and traced - burnt components, corrosion, mechanical damage. For boards with no visible damage where the fault lies in complex integrated circuits or proprietary chips, replacement may be the more practical option, and we'll tell you that upfront.

PCB Repair Pricing

PCB repairs are quoted on a case-by-case basis after diagnosis. Labour is charged at $60/hour (in 15-minute intervals) plus the cost of any replacement components. Many repairs work out significantly cheaper than replacing entire boards.
